What Educators Say

“A much more relaxed and productive class than before.”

OMG Chris, this is so great!!! I just want to tell you about my success today using your breathing games!

I laminated the boards (two sided) and gave each child a board during our tennis class (ages 4-6). We left the boards on chairs, next to their water bottles. During class they were allowed to visit the boards if they needed to take a break. It was fascinating watching their high interest in the boards and they took to them like fish to water :)

Instead of getting distracted, when they were waiting their turn to hit balls, I noticed them visiting their boards… fingers tracing the in and out breath while they noticeably breathed… then returning in time for their turn! Genius!

We had a much more relaxed and productive class than before.

I plan to continue with the boards and add the mindfulness exercises each class and see what happens! I absolutely love seeing them go to the boards instead of messing around on the court as they wait their turn!

Thanks a million for your work! I totally love what you are creating!

– Christine J., Tennis and mindfulness teacher

A Few Ways Our Breathing Boards Can Be Used

Slow-paced breathing can help children throughout the day, whether they are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, need to relax or sleep, need to calm their body after exercising, or simply need to pause and reset when they are high energy.

Breathing games are a valuable self-regulation tool that can be used both at home and in the classroom  by parents, counselors, social workers, therapists, special education teachers and classroom teachers as a part of their daily routine, classroom management and/or social-emotional curriculum.

  • Breathing boards can be printed, laminated and placed on a student’s binder, on a desk, in a calm down area, on a wall, or anywhere else where a student might have easy access to them.
  • Give breathing games to your students and their families as a gift.
  • Breathe with the whole class creating a calm class room environment.
  • Use as an individual intervention for students who need additional support with self-regulation.
  • To increase buy-in, allow children to select and/or color their favorites.
  • Use the breathing boards as a part of a calming space, peace corner – a space within the classroom and home where children can use the boards on their own.
  • Use the boards to help children de-stress and to transition or to prepare for a potentially stressful event, such as a doctor’s visit or a difficult task.
  • Use “hand breathing games” to teach a calming technique that can be used independently of the games outside of the classroom.

Using our tangible, memorable, and enjoyable breathing games and stories, you can make self-regulation and mindfulness practice fun and enjoyable, rather than a chore.

Benefits Of Breathing Exercises
✅ Slow-paced breathing can significantly alter a young child’s physiological stress response.

✅ Deep breathing helps activate the body’s relaxation response.

✅ Research shows that different emotions are associated with different forms of breathing. Breathing speeds up during times of emotional distress and slows down during times of relaxation and calm.

✅ Changing the pattern of breath can signal relaxation, slowing the heart rate and stimulating the vagus nerve, which is part of the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for the body’s “rest and digest” activities.

✅ Mindful breathing has been found to reduce anxiety, promote self-regulation and positive thinking.

✅ Mindful breathing has been found to be effective in reducing test anxiety and increase positive automatic thoughts in students.

✅ Meditators who practice mindful breathing have shown an increase in brain activity related to monitoring conflict and inhibiting their responses.

Benefits Of Mindfulness In Children
In children and youth specifically, mindfulness has been found to:

Improve attention and focus (1)

enhance focus in children with ADHD (2)

reduce attention problems (3)

improve grades (4)

improve emotion regulation (5)

mitigate the effects of bullying (6)

improve social skills (7)

improve test anxiety (8)

decrease physical and psycholgial stress (9)

decrease depression (10)

and improve wellbeing. (11)
