A Few Ways Our Breathing Boards Can Be Used

Breathe with the whole class. Each child follows the shape with their finger as they breathe in and out, at their own pace – creating a calm class room environment.

Start with one breathing board. Let the children color it and then breathe together for a minute or two. The next week introduce another board. And so on.

Use as an individual intervention for students who need additional support with self-regulation.

Allow children to pick their favorites and color them for buy-in.

Use the breathing boards as a part of a calming space, peace corner – a space within the classroom and home where children can use the boards on their own.

Use the rectangle shaped breathing board to help children learn to regulate their breathing pattern. When you inhale, your heart rate quickens. When you exhale, your heart rate slows down. Breathing in for a count of four and out for a count of eight for just a few minutes can help to calm your nervous system. Rectangle breathing makes this easy.

Use the “hand breathing board” to teach a calming strategy that is transferrable outside of the classroom. When kids learn to breathe and trace their fingers for focus using the printed breathing board they can use that technique without the board with their hands. This is a smart way to make the skill of mindful breathing even more practical and mobile.
